Belhaven Bikes and Dunbar schools, cycle and scoot towards Big Pedal success in 2015

It’s Big Pedal time again! The Big Pedal is a fun event and it’s a pleasure to help support our local schools’ excellent cycling and scooting efforts!

The Big Pedal is a UK national competition which is a massive cycle and scoot to school event.  This year bike and scooter journeys count equally so the pupils are getting ready to pedal and scoot towards success. In 2014 over a million journeys were made by bike and scooter by pupils at over 1,300 schools. The event takes place 2 – 20 March 2015.

We will again be carrying out free bike safety checks at both schools and trialing free scooter safety checks too. We are donating prizes such as cycle and scooter gift packs which will be distributed by the schools.

Additionally, we are offering our hire bikes free of charge to parents/carers/teachers/supporters who would like to participate in the event.  This year the schools with the most supporter journeys will be entered into a prize draw to win one of 10 family passes from the National Trust for Scotland. Also, every supporter is able to enter a prize draw to win a family cycling holiday from Saddle Skedaddle. See www.bigpedal.org.uk for details.

Dunbar Primary School’s Big Pedal Co-ordinator and Class Teacher Laura Herkes commented, “Last year we came 6th in Scotland and 24th overall in the competition and in 2013 we were awarded first prize for Scotland in the large schools category!  We hope to improve on this success this year and go for ‘in Britain’.  We are actively encouraging as many pupils and adults to cycle/scoot to school during The Big Pedal.  It is a great way to keep healthy, develop independence and look after the environment.”, and Tom Fendick, Technologies Teacher from Dunbar Grammar school, added “Having participated in the Big Pedal for the past few years and been very successful we are looking forward to it again this year. We were knocked from the top spot in Scotland last year so we’ll be looking to do everything we can to increase participation numbers and regain the number one position!”

The Primary has a variety of competitions and fun events planned around the Big Pedal including a prize arranged by the Junior Road Safety Officers for the class who have the highest number of cyclists wearing helmets.
