Belhaven Bikes and Dunbar schools aim to repeat Big Pedal success in 2014

We look forward to the Big Pedal every year now and it’s a pleasure to help support our local schools’ excellent cycling and scooting efforts!

The Big Pedal is a UK national competition which is a massive cycle and scoot to school event. In 2013 over 845,000 journeys were made by bike and scooter by pupils at nearly 1,000 schools. This year it takes place 3-14 March.

The Dunbar schools are aiming to repeat, or better, their success from 2013 when they won their respective categories in Scotland. This was no mean feat as during the event we had some very snowy conditions last year!

We will again be offering prizes such as water bottles and free entries to theSPACE skatepark in North Berwick to the pupils and students and also carrying out free bike safety checks at both schools during the competition. Adrian Girling, Coordinator of Uprising East Lothian said  “theSPACE fully supports the efforts of local groups, individuals and businesses who make the Big Pedal a success in Dunbar. All community action that encourages people to get together to be active and social is a great thing and all power to Dunbar for making this happen”

Additionally, we are offering our hire bikes free of charge to parents/supporters who would like to participate in the event as these journeys to school also contribute greatly to the points awarded to the school. If you are interested in the use of a bike to support the Big Pedal, you can contact us on 01368 860300 or email [email protected]

Dunbar Primary School’s Big Pedal Co-ordinator and Class Teacher Laura Herkes, commented “Last year we were awarded first prize for Scotland in the large schools category!  We hope to improve on this success this year and go for ‘in Britain’.  We are actively encouraging as many pupils and adults to cycle/scoot to school during The Big Pedal.  It is a great way to keep healthy, develop independence and look after the environment.”, and Tom Fendick, Technologies Teacher from Dunbar Grammar school, added “Having participated in the Big Pedal for the past few years and been very successful we are looking forward to it again this year. As long as the weather stays good (fingers crossed!) we’ll be encouraging as many students and staff to cycle to school for the event. Why stop there though – it would be great to see more pupils cycling to school everyday throughout the year!”

The Primary has a variety of competitions and fun events planned around the Big Pedal. Parents, supporters and teachers will be given a raffle ticket for each day they cycle to school for entry into our prize draw to win a Belhaven Bikes £25 gift card. There will be a ‘bling your helmet’ day, why not bling your bike too! During the event there will also be an opportunity for pupils to dress up as superheroes to pedal or scoot to school. Parents and teachers are welcome to join in too!
